I had the pleasure of going to Made in America this weekend to see a whole slew of artists, from 2 Chainz to Rudimental to Haim to the final act of the night -- BEYONCE. I tried desperately to compile my thoughts into a coherent collection, but instead have to resort to photos to show you all the glory that was Made in America, Day 1. Please know that I wanted to make it to Day 2 to see the inimitable coolness that is Solange, Miguel, and Kendrick Lamar, but my mind, body and spirit were exhausted from standing shoulder to shoulder in 88 degree heat with thousands of strangers, so I packed my bag and headed home. Here are some of my favorite things that I saw.
Warning: a lot of pictures of Beyonce will follow. Prepare yourself.
Here are the sisters Haim, closing out their incredible set with a sister drum circle rock out. I will gladly trade my sisters for these sisters, if they can teach me the ways of the center part, and that effortless, ombre-haired, LA cool.
Deadmau5 masks were a thing that happened, and Deadmau5's crowd was one of the biggest of the night. Here's a gentleman combining his love for Canada, Deadmau5 AND America all in one handy outfit!
HAIM <3 <3: I know this picture isn't the best, but something about this enomous American flag and the tiny figures of the Haim sisters rocking out really speaks to me. Picture cut-offs, boot, flippy black baby-doll dresses, and a killer leather vest: the best contemporary interpretation of Americana and 90s nostalgia.
When it was Beyonce time, we had a plan: camp out as close as we could and sit through Phoenix's amazing, face-melting set, and then when it was Bey O'Clock, stand up move forward and get as close as possible. "Close" meant about as close as I am in thse pictures, because after 8 hours of standing in a crowd, I was not pressed to move that much more. Beyonce was incredible, possibly a robot, but if that's the case, the best performing robot of all time. Here are two of my favorite pictures of her from the night:
She is a flawless human being. Really, and truly, flawless.
